Namban Folding Screens Procession of the Merchants Twilly - Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga

Inspiration
Polyester
Twilly in printed polyester satin, inspired by a detail of the Nau do Trato of a Namban folding screen (pair), dating from the beginning of the 17th century, with the seal of Kanō Naizen.
The arrival of the Portuguese in Japan in 1543 gave rise to commercial and cultural exchanges that were recorded in the two pairs of screens present in this museum: the curiosity and festive atmosphere aroused by the arrival of the black ship of the namban jin (the barbarians from the south, as the Portuguese were called) in the port of Nagasaki.
